About the competition

Each year the American Society of Architectural Illustrators invites professional and student illustrators from around the globe to take part in the Architecture in Perspective competition. This international juried competition recognizes the world’s best architectural illustrations. Submitted artworks may be created in any 2D medium including drawings, paintings, renderings, and digital imagery.

We are mixing things up a bit this year with a special Themed Section. Let’s see your best vision for a “Future Re-imagined”!

The competition’s top award — the Hugh Ferriss Memorial Prize — is considered one of the highest professional honors for an architectural illustrator.

Selected artists will be announced on the website BUT you’ll have to wait until the online conference to see who the top winners are see be sure to stay tuned for information regarding the conference.

All award-winning entries and honorable mentions will be published online and in a commemorative Architecture in Perspective catalog.

Eligibility

The Architecture in Perspective 36 professional competition is open to current 2021 professional and student members of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators. ASAI is an international nonprofit organization open to anyone engaged in the serious pursuit of architectural illustration.

Competition Categories

The Architecture in Perspective Professional Competition features two sections: Rendering and Observational. The Rendering section includes Formal and Informal categories.

A separate competition is held for Students.

Rendering: Formal category

The Formal category of the professional competition includes formal presentation renderings, drawings, paintings and digital imagery of unbuilt and imaginary architectural works.

Rendering: Informal category

The Informal category of the professional competition includes sketches and informal drawings, paintings and digital imagery of unbuilt and imaginary architectural works.

Observational section

The Observational section of the professional competition includes field sketches, plein air drawings, and depictions of existing architectural subjects.

Thematic Section

ASAI would like to invite all professional and student illustrators and designers to dream big about the future and translate your ideas for a “Future Re-imagined” into a single visual.

Judges

DENNIS ALLAIN

Dennis Allain AIA is an architect/illustrator who has been practicing architecture and creating artwork for over 30 years. Allain’s work stands out as unique in the world of architectural visualization, balancing the use of digital painting tools of this era with a sensibility that is profoundly rooted in the traditional past. Such notable works as the critically acclaimed Arthur V. McCarthy Memorial (Hugh Ferriss winner, 2006) and Alone (his second Hugh Ferriss Prize, 2020) have helped earn him an international reputation as an innovative leader in the world of architectural design and illustration.

KEELY COLCLEUGH Keely is the founder of Kilograph and Kilograph SL. She is a designer with more than 25 years experience in the fields of architectural design, visual effects, brand design and exhibition design. Keely is member of the executive committee at the A+D museum, past president of the ASAI and serves on the juries of Architizer and the Architecture Master Prize awards annually.

NATALIYA ELISEEVA

Nataliya Eliseeva is an architect, interior designer and artist. She graduated with honors from the Moscow Architectural Institute (MARCHI)  with a degree in Architecture and studied at the MARCHI Postgraduate school.

She has been awarded the medal of architecture for the 850th anniversary of Moscow. She has also been selected in the international graphic competitions such as the KRob Architecture Competition and the Architecture in Perspective Professional Competition with the American Society of Architectural Illustrators. Nataliya has been  published in the annual editions “Architecture in Perspective Catalog”, “AD” magazine and others.

PEDRO FERNANDES

Pedro is the Founder and Creative Director of Arqui9 Visualisation. Two-time winner of the CGArchitect Awards for bets Non-commissioned image, Arqui9 Learn Youtube creator and surf aficionado. Having lived and worked in Portugal, Australia and UK, where he founded the Arqui9 studio. Pedro, originally trained as an architect in Portugal, quickly discovering the passion and obsession of creating and displaying architectural worlds and ideas. Since it’s inception, Arqui9 has not only grown as a team but also become an international reference in the industry, working with some of the worlds leading practices & companies, including BIG, Ferrari, Foster & Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects, Aedas, Martha Schwartz and Partners, Heatherwick Studios, Mark Foster Gage, AECOM amongst others

 

MIKE GOLDEN

Mike is the man behind the visualization studio, Three Marks. On the internet, he masquerades under the alias @droquis. In past lives he’s been the Head of 3D for KitBash3D, an in-house visualist for Thomas Juul-Hansen, and an Art Director of CGI for DBOX. He has an undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of Chicago, a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, and continues to lecture and lead workshops at schools and conferences around the world.

VERA KOLGASHKINA

Vera graduated from the Moscow Institute of Architecture in 2010 with a PhD in Architecture.

Currently, she is an associate professor of the Department of “Drawing” and the Department of “Architecture of Residential Buildings” at the Moscow Institute of Architecture. She has also participated in numerous collective exhibitions. In 2019, she was featured in a personal exhibition taking place at the “Catacomba” gallery in Moscow.

Entry Fees

Professionals

Individual and Corporate memberships include 1 entry into the competition. Additional entries up to a maximum of 10 entries are available at a discounted rate for members.

Students

The entry fee for students is free up to a maximum of 5 entries. Students MUST currently be enrolled in school and provide a current Student ID card at the time of entry.

Artwork guidelines

  • Hand-done and digital architectural illustrations in any medium
  • Client-commissioned, self-commisioned, and imaginary works
  • Perspective and orthographic views

Submission requirements

  • Join membership at www.directory.asai.org
  • Upload digital images
    • Maximum 4MB file size (Larger images may be requested for publication)
    • Images may be any pixel dimensions
    • High quality JPG, PNG or TIF formats saved in RGB color mode
    • Please name images as lastname-firstname-01, lastname-firstname-02, etc
